Do you know who Bob Barr is? I do but I am a bit confused. I know he’s running for President on the Libertarian Ticket but his opinions don’t seem to make sense with their ideas. I’ve known quite a few Libertarians in my life and we agree on some issues and respectfully differ on others. So I looked them up. According to their web site (www.lp.org) this is what the Libertarian party stands for.
The Libertarian Party is your representative in American politics. It is the only political organization which respects you as a unique and competent individual. Supported a Constitutional Amendment for school prayer.
Libertarians believe in the American heritage of liberty, enterprise, and personal responsibility. Libertarians recognize the responsibility we all share to preserve this precious heritage for our children and grandchildren.
Libertarians believe that being free and independent is a great way to live. We want a system which encourages all people to choose what they want from life; that lets them live, love, work, play, and dream their own way. Voted YES on banning gay adoptions in DC.
The Libertarian way is a caring, people-centered approach to politics. We believe each individual is unique. We want a system which respects the individual and encourages us to discover the best within ourselves and develop our full potential.
The Libertarian way is a logically consistent approach to politics based on the moral principle of self-ownership. Each individual has the right to control his or her own body, action, speech, and property. Government’s only role is to help individuals defend themselves from force and fraud. Voted YES on banning physician-assisted suicide. Voted YES on prohibiting needle exchange & medical marijuana in DC.
The Libertarian Party is for all who don’t want to push other people around and don’t want to be pushed around themselves. Live and let live is the Libertarian way.

Of course there is the fact that as a member of the House Barr was the one who first introduced a resolution directing Judiciary Committee to inquire into impeachment proceedings against then President Clinton. This was before Monica Lewinsky over campaign finance laws. Once Lewinsky came to light he must have been a very happy man. We just shouldn’t look too closely into his own personal life, divorced twice, married three times you know, those good family values.
According to Zogby International he is now polling at 6% nationally.
The examples go on and on. Now I know that people’s ideas change but holy cow this is either the most open minded politician I’ve ever seen or just really opportunistic. What do you think? At 6% nationally should he be included in debates? I mean Perot was polling at 7-9 percent in 1992 and wound up getting almost 19 percent of the popular vote. He certainly made the debates more entertaining. If he gets any actual traction he could put quite a few states (GA, NC, SC, etc) into Obama’s column by peeling votes from McCain. This should be interesting to watch. Comments of course are welcome.
