The New York Times on Monday, July 7th examined the debate among physicians on the value of recommending that women ages 80 and older receive annual mammograms. There is not much data available for this age group because large clinical trials traditionally focused on younger people and excluded the very old.

There is an article about this in the New York Times as well. I am REALLY concerned about the idea of women being told that it is “probably” not cancer and to come back in 6 months for another scan. I’m not an oncologist or a radiologist, just a woman who had breast cancer. [...]

So the most recent news shows that a combination finds more breast cancers earlier BUT it has many more false positives. Now I don’t know about anyone else but I have a significant degree of anxiety waiting for test results. That being said, I’d rather have a negative biopsy for a false positive than advanced [...]
