In 2007, at age 42 Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Elizabeth Cowie was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq. She could have gotten out of her National Guard obligation but refused to stay behind despite a diagnosis of cancer in her right breast. Her treatment included a May 22 lumpectomy, a second surgery a week later and a five-day targeted radiation treatment. She was deployed at the end of June.
