Cancer yard sale – Just a cool article

Yard Sale raises $15K for breast-cancer research By Grant LaFleche, Standard Staff

Ann B. Hill would have been proud. At least, Phyllis Gleeson hopes so.

Last year, Hill, who worked at Remax Garden City, held a yard sale at her home to try and raise money for breast cancer research.

She passed away just before Christmas, but her colleagues and friends decided that Hill was onto something important and set out to keep the event alive, Gleeson said.

And they did. In spades.

The Larger Than Life Yard Sale for the Cure, hosted by Remax, was held in the parking lot of the Quality Hotel Parkway Convention Centre on Ontario Street on Saturday. The event attracted hundreds of people who enjoyed a sliver of sunny weather before rain moved in later in the day.

“Oh, this is a lot bigger than the event last year,” said Gleeson, who hopes the yard sale will be an annual event.

Gleeson said she visited with Hill before she died, and said they were going ahead with the fundraising effort. Organizers were motivated by Hill’s example, she said.

“All the money is going to the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton,” she said. “Around 1,100 (Niagara residents) go there every year, so the money is still supporting local people.”

Shoppers browsed rows of typical yard sale items, from children’s toys to appliances and clothes, while listening to the music of local band Jonesy.

Shopper and event volunteer Randy Mulder was shaking his hips to the music along with his six-year-old, Matthew, with plastic instruments bought at the yard sale

“We’re building an air band,” Mulder said. “We’ve been able to find the guitar and the keyboard. We just need find some drums.”
