According to a study in the journal Cancer, breast cancer patients should undergo routine surveillance for sub-clinical lymphadema. That’s a great idea and I fully support that. My concern? The numbers in this study are staggering estimating 33 to 47 percent of women who have axillary dissection and 4 to 17% in women who have sentinel node biopsy. This needs to be discussed with women and followed up on by not only their surgeons (who we’re usually done with relatively soon) but by oncologists, gynecologists and general practitioners. My surgeon may have discussed this early on but of course my brain was focused on something else CANCER! Ladies, we are our own advocates and need to help each other get the word out one person at a time.
