Hundreds of fallen heroes still aren’t getting the recognition they deserve, nearly seven years after 9/11, two politicians charged Sunday.
City Councilman David Weprin (D-Queens) and state Sen. Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn) want the medical examiner to identify first responders who died as a result of their work at Ground Zero and reclassify them as victims of the terrorist attacks.
“Those individuals who spent many days, weeks and months at Ground Zero are heroes, and they should be recognized as such,” Weprin said.
Adams introduced a bill in the Senate that would force the medical examiner to reclassify the deaths.
Those who died from respiratory ailments and other conditions in the aftermath of the attacks are listed as having died natural deaths. Declaring that they died in the line of duty would entitle their families to additional death benefits.
