This has been a good week for options in breast cancer treatment.
An experimental breast cancer vaccine makes mice reject tumors — even cancers no longer sensitive to Herceptin. Now i know that last year there was a vaccine that looked good in the lab but was not effective in humans but lets try to stay optimistic.
The vaccine targets breast cancers that are HER-2 positive, about 25% of breast cancer patients. This vaccine has worked in the lab (mice) on Herceptin resistant tumors as well as those that are not resistant.
A version of the vaccine is now undergoing human safety tests.
I love the idea of being able to amp up our own immune system to fight cancer. While this research is HER-2 specific, in my opinion progress for any subgroup is progress for everyone.
My oncologist once said to me that every day you don’t die of cancer is another chance that you won’t die of cancer. Let’s hope he’s right.
Research findings are published in the Sept. 15 issue of Cancer Research.
